  17. <p>     U.S., British and French military men couldn't wait to paw
  18. over some of the Soviet-supplied Iraqi tanks littering the
  19. Kuwaiti desert. They expected the abandoned armor to be a boon
  20. for battlefield training and analysis. But many tanks were
  21. reduced to smoldering hulks by guided missiles. Others, taken
  22. out by A-10 attack planes, at first appear to be in good
  23. condition, until survey crews discover a small hole in their
  24. exteriors. That hole indicates that shrapnel produced by
  25. armor-piercing shells has destroyed everything inside. Although
  26. the allies captured thousands of Iraqi tanks, the Americans
  27. have found just five reasonably intact specimens of the T-72,
  28. the top Soviet model.
